Description

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Two stars only because there seemed to be a plot early on in the movie. As the movie went on I was dying to know how it was going to end. But then when it finally ended I was sourly disappointed. If you choose to watch, be forewarned of the lackluster ending.
  • Artistic, gripping and playfully grim.

I'm glad I waited for this to come out on iTunes and didn't see it in the movies. It was long and drawn out with all the angst and emotion and pointless drama of the teenage years. I can imagine many middle schoolers and teenagers identifying with this movie but I didn't want to immerse myself back into that world. I guess it's possibly a testiment to a movie well done if that was it's point? Not a "feel good" movie at all. Most of the time the main character and the supporting characters were feeling awful. All I can say is meh.

This movie is exactly what’s wrong with the world. It’s not witty or insightful. It’s just sad. Don’t bother, unless you love hating yourself. It looks like most of us do these days. Eat up!

Lady Bird deserves all the recognition it got, and it should get more attention. The acting is incredible, along with the casting. As soon as I finished watching it, I wanted to watch it again.

Lady Bird is easily one of the most overhyped, overrated films I have seen in quite some time. While there is artistic merit that can be found in the characters’ interactions with each other as well as the story, every character involved in it is flat, poorly written, or just absolutely insufferable, supercilious, and self-serving. Lady Bird is the prime example of such a character, with her mistakes driving a paper thin script in a way that makes her easily the most unlikable character in cinematic history. The pacing is incredibly slow, the cinematography lacking in variation, depth and light in general, the characters’ development practically non-existent (until the conclusion), and one of the hastily rushed endings I have ever seen. Don’t bother seeing this film. You’re only doing a disservice to yourself if you do. Settle in with another favorite movie instead.
